What youth football really costs

In 2026, a year of football at a private academy in western Romania costs between 3,500 and 7,500 lei all in. The monthly fee is between half and two thirds of that. The rest goes on boots, kit, travel and charges most clubs do not put on their website.

Almost every conversation about cost stops at the monthly fee, which is the predictable part. The problem for a household budget is everything else, which arrives irregularly and usually all in the same month.

The monthly fee

Type of clubPer monthPer year, 10 months
School sport club0 to 150 lei0 to 1,500 lei
Club youth section150 to 350 lei1,500 to 3,500 lei
Private academy, small groups250 to 550 lei2,500 to 5,500 lei

Most clubs bill ten months a year, with July and August free or charged separately as a camp. Check which applies, because the difference is a full monthly fee.

Boots

The most underestimated cost, because it repeats. A child between six and twelve changes shoe size every six to nine months, and boots wear out in a season anyway.

  • Boots for synthetic or grass: 150 to 400 lei a pair.
  • Usually two pairs a year for a child growing quickly.
  • Shin pads and socks: 60 to 120 lei a year.

Do not buy expensive boots for a child under ten. They do not play better in them and they will have grown out of them in seven months.

Club kit

This is where most surprises appear. Some clubs include one set in the fee, some sell it separately, and a few mandate a single supplier at above market price.

A full training set plus match kit generally runs between 250 and 600 lei. Ask whether it is included and whether you are required to buy it from the club.

The costs that are not on the website

  • Federation registration, where it applies: 50 to 150 lei a year.
  • The annual sports medical: 100 to 250 lei.
  • Travel to matches: 300 to 1,200 lei a year, depending on how many and who drives.
  • Tournaments and camps: 400 to 1,500 lei each, usually optional on paper.
  • A one-off joining fee at some clubs: 100 to 300 lei.

If the number is too high

Plenty of clubs hold reduced fee places and simply do not advertise them. Ask directly and in private. It is a far more ordinary conversation than you think, and no serious club discusses it with anyone else.
